Earle is a cult hero figure in many music circles. And I suspect there isn’t a saxophonist alive who doesn’t enjoy playing the solo from Harlem Nocturne. It sounds like he led a very full life, full of music, friends, and interesting work. His home page is at http://www.earlehagen.net/home.htm where you can read more about this fascinating fellow.

As requested here is Harlem Nocturne as performed by the inimitable Earl Bostic.

I remember that Nocturne well.  I didn’t know he helped with it.  Get any sweet baby pics yet?  I know you said you were getting ready to.

What a wonderful picture to include with your blog in this lovely tribute to Hagan.  I can hear the theme in my mind right now, and think about how important to a movie, or television show, a theme can be.   Musicians can have such an impact in soothing our souls, cheering our countenances, or bringing back happy or melancholy moments.  Sometimes, with some of us not being musicians ourselves, we don’t always pay attention to the people that are bringing us that pleasure.  Thanks J, for this blog.
