Photographing Cats Takes Patience

I got a request for more cat pictures but I really need to figure that out. Cats, you see, don’t care whether their pictures are taken or not. They’d rather be petted, or fed, or played with. Here are the only three pictures, closely cropped, that I managed to salvage from over a hundred attempts. And an older picture just so show that sometimes I can take a good pic. By the end the cats had had enough and, so had I. :o)

Theo's Stare  Macy's an Art Critic

Dharma is always Quiet  DSCF0005

I call the first one ‘Thelonius’ Stare’ and I try not to guess what Theo is thinking of this picture taking experience. I call the next one ‘Macy the Art Critic’ as she seemed to go from picture to picture for most of the shots that I was able to take. The first one in the second row has to be ‘Dharma is always Quiet’. She was touted as too wild for most houses, so Suzy knew she’d be the perfect friend to the Bengal cats. Suzy was, once again, correct. And the last picture of our family does show sweet Shelby in the family room, but mostly it’s to show you that sometimes I can take a non-fuzzy picture.

I have to say, taking pictures of saxophones is much easier.  ;o)

Meet Macy, our new Bengal

MacyMacy joined the household today and she is getting to know the gang. I thought I’d provide a picture of the newest addition. I have to admit there have been some hissing fits, huge, fuzzy tails, and on a number of occasions a barking dog. But methinks that is to be expected when a new furry family member joins our house.

Macy is a four month old Bengal kitten from the Cheetahsden Bengals Northwest cattery in Sammamish. We feel very flattered and proud that Kelli allowed us to adopt Macy who was going to be a show cat. She has stellar markings and colorings, but she is different from Thelonius (Theo) in size and markings.

Below you can see an older picture of Theo when he was about Macy’s age. We think that Macy is coming along well enough that we might let her run with the big guys tomorrow.

We haven’t told many people about Macy yet, so mums the word, okay.  :o)PairOcats

WJE at Seattle Center House

The Woodinville Jazz Ensemble played at the Seattle Center House (next to the Space Needle) this last weekend. I got Allie to use my new camera to record it for us. But the resolution was so high that the picture was too phat for YouTube or Soapbox. They require a file 100 mB or smaller. So using the cheap software that came with the camera I reduced it and still one song was too phat. So I reduced it to e-mail size and it is not very clear but functional. Here is the Woodinville Jazz Ensemble playing Count Basie’s "Hayburner".

Piano Lessons with Amber

DSCF0136Amber is three and a half and sometimes she deigns to play her red recorder or the piano. So yesterday I took pictures. We were watching Amber because our daughter Josie had back surgery which we hope will both fix her and eliminate the pain she has been suffering with for almost two years.

See how sweet our granddaughter is at the same piano Suzy took lessons from in the sixties? By the way, this simple Lowery piano still is a great little instrument with solid intonation and good key action. Suzy’s parents picked very nicely when they purchased this instrument for Suzy.

Now, for the after pictures of Amber. She does show a wild streak I think you will agree.  :o)

Well maybe if Amber doesn’t follow through with music she can go into acting. Truth be known, we are not fans of that line of work for family. We are not sure that is a career path that is very healthy.

This is day four of my extended vacation and so far it is going well. I’m not getting much done, but I do get to practice sax with Suzy, go out to visit friends and eat out more. And I did set up my sister’s new blog and help Peter with his. So all is not lost.

Snow in Seattle – 2007

DSCF0091 We awoke this morning to snow so I thought I’d take some pictures of our very strange and wondrous view. These are pictures of our front yard. We don’t get much snow around here so we take notice when it shows up. And driving can become very treacherous as most of the Seattlites are not used to icy road conditions.

DSCF0093 We went to our Holiday Music gig with the Woodinville Jazz Ensemble at the Seattle Center House today. Fortunately the roads were not yet bad. The concert was a hoot with a good turnout. I hope to post something on Soapbox soon so that you hear a song from the concert. I took the film at such a high resolution that I have to reduce the quality somehow.

We’ve been home for a while now and it has snowed for over an hour. I have a gig at the theater tonight, so it will be interesting to so if the sold out house has a lot of empty seats due to the weather. BTW, the run of ‘A Chorus Line’ and the Second Story Rep sold out every night but one, which is a record for the theater. But then, Washingtonians love there musicals. When Young Frankenstein was here those tickets got very hard to find, very fast.

Amazon’s Kindle, just in time for Christmas

I bought an electronic book a while back, okay over ten years ago, but there were not enough titles and certainly not the titles I was reading which was mostly books from the best seller’s list. Walt Mossberg, one of my fav high-tech columnists writes about a new entry into the market.

Photo

"Now, the biggest name in online book sales, Amazon.com, is entering the fray with a $400 electronic book reader called Kindle that aims to succeed by offering a much better shopping experience.

The Kindle is the first e-book reader that allows you to select, buy and download titles directly to the device, instead of downloading them to a PC first and then transferring them over. Amazon is offering a large collection of digitized books — about 90,000 — compared with fewer than 25,000 for Sony. The Kindle also can download newspapers, magazines and blogs directly, and update them automatically. This is possible because the Kindle comes with free, built-in wireless Internet access, using a cellular data network."

I found the comments to be especially insightful too. Having bought a number of titles for my old unit, I’d have to rebuy them if I wanted to read them on a new unit. Go figure.
