Took Pics of the Couf Twins ;o)

I took some pictures of my all-time favorite saxophones.

After trying a Selmer Mark VI and VII, Keilwerth SX90, Buffet SuperDynAction (SDA), Yamaha 62 Mark II, Yamaha 82Z, Gary Sugal series III, I have found a Couf Superba I tenor that practically matches my Couf alto sax. They are both part of the 81,xxx serial number series. I love them to death and call them the twins.

The Couf twins have been adjusted and had pads replaced. Last week a new alto player showed up with a Silver Selmer Mark VI. She has a degree in sax performance and she blew us away. But part way through the session her sax keyworks started acting up. Since I was on the Couf tenor, I lent her the Couf alto which was in the stand behind me. She loved it–most players do.
Then I came to piece that didn’t have a tenor part which happens in community bands. So I grabbed her Mark VI (we were each using our own mouthpieces) and played with the bari player. The had an excellent sound but the keywords were way out of whack and there were leaks. I guessing it will cost more than $300 to get this horn back in shape.
But she is just out of college and doesn’t have the money to get the horn fixed. She was able to fix the sticking key for the time being. If you have a nice horn, and most of the favs listed are very nice, and your horn is well regulated with decent pads… Well sometimes I just think we don’t appreciate how good we have it.

Amber’s Music Career :o)

Amber picked up the soprano sax turned to me and said, “How do you finger that middle Gb again?”

Anyway you want, honey.

The Three Saxmen

My son Aaron and his wife are visiting for Christmas. We have been playing sax almost every day.

Here is a picture of Aaron, my Grandson Nick (3d grade) and I:

Nicky the Grandson Saxman

Nicky is nine and he is learning to play sax. He has had three lessons from his grandpa (me). At a Christmas party he pulled out his alto sax and just started playing. It was quite musical considering that he only knows a few notes. I was impressed and he played for about 15 minutes while everyone else talked and drank punch.

I hired a quartet to play. The alto sax player was Colin and friend of mine who has helped me with my return to the sax. They were quite good and played much longer than the agreed upon time. I’m glad they decided to perform for this party.

Nicky is working on his fourth lesson. I should give him some assistance.

Gigging at Crossroads.

Saxman Gandalfe had a gig this noon at Crossroads on the eastside. Weese like Christmas music and the concert went well. People were singing and one person was crying during “Blue Ridge Autumn”. No because it was that good.

Then we had the Christmas party at my house. The food and drink was excellent and the company fun. Mom and Dad were there and poor Shelby (the German Shepard) could hardly handle the company in ‘her’ house. This playing sax after a 27 year hiatus really is paying off. And now Suzy is playing clarinet again.

Faith in the Key of G

Kenny G is playing in the background, his Faith CD with nice Christmas music. Shelby, my German Shep is laying at my feet and the fire is crackling in the fire place. I like the library, where we are now, because libraries were there before TVs for me. In the early 60s we lived one house down from the county library.

Welcome to the blog of random mutterings and semi coherent chatter from a saxman of little repute. Watch it, I may pull out my Couf Superba I alto and regale you with ‘Over the Rainbow’. Thanks for listening.
