Viral Video Shows the Extent of U.S. Wealth Inequality

Think you know where the money is distributed in the US? Think again.

Mashable: The issue of wealth inequality across the United States is well known, but this video shows you the extent of that imbalance in dramatic and graphic fashion.

The video, which started going viral on Friday and whose traffic continues to climb on YouTube — reflects the facts as seen from many different sources. We present it without comment, letting you, our readers, be the judge.

MJJO at the Jumpin’ Jive to Thrive dance 2013

Suzy joins me on tenor for this event. I *really* like performances where she can make it. Since she works nights, she isn’t always available.

The National Community Band 2013

“From childhood I was passionately fond of music and wanted to be a musician. I have no recollection of any real desire ever to be anything else.” ~ John Philip Sousa

image

Suzy and I will be performing in our third National Community Band concert. We have never been to Boston and really look forward to the trip. The other two times we went to Las Vegas and New Orleans.

The John Philip Sousa Foundation is sponsoring the event. The concert features the music that Sousa used all the time. And the director dresses up as Sousa and directs like Sousa. It is quite an experience to be in this all-star band made up of professional musicians and educators.

imageSuzy will be playing the clarinet and I the tenor sax this year. Getting the tenor sax on the plane is always an exercise filled with intrigue and potential pit falls. Here’s hoping my baby doesn’t end up in the baggage hold compartment of the plane.

My friends from Boston recommend the following attractions during any off time we have from practicing for the concert:

1. The Freedom Trail
2. An air conditioned oyster bar by the waterfront
3. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
4. The USS Constitution

Suzy is busy booking the flight, hotel room, and car rental. We will get the music sometime in April or May. This looks to be a very exciting trip and one that we are looking forward to.

Ever Google Your Name?

imageWhen you have a common name like mine, Googling it can be a very humbling experience. I was reading the Recruiters Lounge article, You’re a Nobody unless your name Googles Well and started pinging my name. Bonus learning, adding an employer, hobby, or other disambiguater changes where you end up in the pages.

First of all, I’m wondering if my search results are tailored to me. It would certainly appear to be the case in Google, where I am in five of the top six hits. In Bing, I only show up once in the top five.

But searching on “jim glass” + mjjo brings up my hobby band and this old post that I threw up just to show my friends how cool my sax section is. Fun times.

Microsoft Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra Pictures

You don’t take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it.” ~Anon

I asked a friend of mine to take some photos at the last Microsoft Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra gig. We have a lot of fun playing swing music, especially when the swing dancers show up. This one was special because we had a guest female vocalist. So I thought I’d share some with you. The rest are on my Flickr site.

New Big Band Fronts ~ You Choose

I am designing the next band fronts for my band. Do y’all have a fav?

MJJO_3  MJJO_2  MJJO_1

I’m leaning toward the black background with the font from the white sample above. But I actually like all of these. We were going to use an icon, but I want the fronts that have the band name readable from the dance floor and still be somewhat fashionable. Cheers.

MJJO Guest Vocalist, Tae Phoenix

“I’ve often cringed when I heard myself described as a jazz singer. I’ve always thought of myself as a jazz vocalist.” ~ Cassandra Wilson

imageAfter a gig at Winterfest 2013 a young lady walked up to the band and said, I’d love to sing with this band. We have two female vocalists and I kinda though, yeah right. To be quite frank, we hear that a lot. But I went ahead and asked her for her creds, and she shot us some vids. Oh… my… gawd.

So the gig last night came at a time that both our regular female vocalists were outta town on business. Yes, the Microsoft Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra is a hobby band where all the performers have day jobs. So we called upon Tae Phoenix to deliver the goods, and she did that, and in spades!

This video doesn’t do her justice. The camera is too close to the drums, and the band isn’t miked right for a recording. Truth be known, I rarely provide videos of singers because the video process *always* distorts the sound. But this was something special. Enjoy.

Tell me that didn’t make your day. :0)

Reddit’s 100 Most Beautiful Songs

“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”Plato

If you’ve been living in a cave, here’s a musical update. Reddit’s 100 Most Beautiful Songs has everyone talking. So many people voted and Reddit posted the 100 most popular. What an eclectic list; classical to pop. Unfortunately many genre’s, like jazz, are missing. But maybe the missing genre’s are more about who reads Reddit and who doesn’t.

image

A snapshot of the culture in 2012, many of these songs are familiar to me because I’ve played them in Wind Concert bands. Can you make it through the list. Enjoy.

After the gig…

“With every gig we have to prove ourselves better than the night before.” ~ Ron Wood

And after a long running gig, there is usually profound sadness.

After the gig...

But then, there is always the next gig to get ready for.
