Sexy, Naughty Halloween

“If human beings had genuine courage, they’d wear their costumes every day of the year, not just on Halloween.” ~ Doug Coupland

PaganWitchHalloween is a time of fantasy, full on dress up fun, and unique party and food options. Halloween was originally All Hallows’ Eve, incorporating traditions from pagan harvest festivals and festivals honoring the dead, particularly the Celtic Samhain.

The most popular festival, in ancient times as well as modern Pagan society, is Samhain or Samhuinn, the Celtic new year. Read more from “The Facts on Halloween”.

Naughty-School-NurseHalloween in modern times has become a sugar fest, a time for kids to get their sweet tooth satisfied and a time for adults to step out dressed as something they wouldn’t otherwise wear outside of their house. Will you be wearing a costume to work this season?

BatGirlAnd at the universities, well let’s just say all bets are off. For example, there is the Night of Decadence, a party held every year around Halloween at Wiess College at Rice University. It’s a legendary party held at Rice and in Houston, drawing young alumni and students from other universities in addition to Rice students. It was also named to the Top 10 College Parties in America by Playboy magazine in the 1970s.

superherobabe.smInstead of traditional costumes, students dress as degenerately (or as minimally) as possible. Pregnant nuns and drag dress are some of the tamer outfits. Although there are always several people creatively attired in Saran Wrap or fishnet stockings and pasties, a typical costume is boxer shorts for men, and bra and panties for women.  Because of its overtly sexual context, the party eventually became a polarizing event on the Rice campus.

pumpkinbeerHalloween bad girl costumes include superheroes, nurses, witches, and zombies.  Even just wearing sexy lingerie can be seen.  And the bravest women can be seen wearing little more than paint. Note, since I’ve been out of college, I have not been invited to parties like that. Ah, to be young and dumb again.

Here’s hoping you have a fun holiday season. But don’t drink too much pumpkin beer.

Birdland Big Band on Section (Ensemble) Playing

The Rico Reed folks recently shared some time with the sax section from the Birdland Big Band. The conversation was so good I wanted to capture some of it here for future reference.

BirdlandBigBand

Bret Pimentel · Assistant Professor of Woodwinds at Delta State University

What tips do you have on section playing?

Nathan Childers · New York, New York

<Tip: start this Basie recording before reading on for the full effect.>

Hi Bret, thanks for the great question! I certainly “second” the thoughts of my section mates. This is a wide ranging topic.

Section playing is a skill and art form unto itself. Ideally, each player possesses a knowledge of theory, composition, melodic structure, and historical perspective. The Birdland Big Band is made up of highly skilled performers and composers that have an intimate knowledge of these concepts.

Many of the great big band composers (Ellington, Basie, etc..) wrote pieces based upon the skills and assets of the individual band members. As such, their work became a team effort between the composer and the player. This was a driving force behind their success and musicality. That’s why it’s nearly impossible to sound just like one of those bands. The compositions and the players were inseparable.

It’s essential that modern players consider each composition in a global sense as they learn their individual parts. In addition to some of the important basics like notes, rhythm, tempo, articulation, breath, phrasing, style, it’s important to understand your role within the section and the ensemble. Your task is to accomplish the goals of the composer while adding your unique “stamp” along the way.

Young players are often highly focused on their individual part during practice and rehearsal. It takes time to feel comfortable and confident enough to listen across the ensemble while playing your own part. I call this skill lateral listening.

Neal Hefti’s composition Li’l Darlin’ is often used to develop team skills, tonal color, and nuance within an ensemble. It’s also a good work space for lateral listening concepts.

Here are some habits and exercises for a saxophone section to consider…

Rehearse without the rest of the band whenever possible. Use this time to explore and develop items such as clean articulation, dynamics, style interpretation, and phrasing.
Bring pencils to all rehearsals. Write in relevant details such as breath marks, cut-offs, phrasing, and dynamics. Discuss your parts in detail as a section.

Practice your parts in various groupings (duos, trios, both tenors, alto and bari, both altos, etc..). This will help you isolate various discrepancies and areas for improvement.
Record some of your rehearsals and listen back as a section.

Practice with a tuner. Use the tuner to check chord voicings and unison lines throughout the piece. Write in reminders and arrows in order to help clean up the intonation.
Practice with a metronome (one that can change pitch on any chosen beat and can subdivide, like a Dr. Beat). Challenge the section with different tempos and beat accents within the measure.

The lead alto player will decide the overall style, articulation, and sound concept for the section. The lead alto part is usually the highest written note within the saxophone chord voicing. As a result, the listener will hear this part as a “lead” sound. The lead alto player also sits directly in front of the lead trombone and the lead trumpet. These three players create their own team and must be listening to each other at all times. Similarly, their notes are often the top notes of chord voicings within their section.

Each section member is an equal partner in the success of the band. Interpretation, stylization, and performance is only as good as the commitment of each individual.
I highly recommend that all middle school, high school, and college music programs incorporate saxophone quartets into their required saxophone curriculum. Saxophone quartets provide an incredible opportunity to build the fundamentals of section playing. Each member should have the opportunity to perform on each chair (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) throughout their studies.

Listen, listen, listen! Make sure you are listening to a lot of big bands both live and on recordings.

Car Accidents Happen ~ Tips to the Wise

“I don’t want to die in a car accident. When I die it’ll be a glorious day. It’ll probably be a waterfall.” ~ River Phoenix

This tip du jour taken from an interesting thread at work. I wanted to share I with my family and friends. I have changed and edited it a bit.

imageWhen dealing with either insurance regarding the accident, if anyone contacts you asking you to walk them through it, or describe the accident, tell them that it’s not a good time. Maybe tell them that if they would send you written a list of questions you’d be happy to respond  as soon as possible in writing.

If they push it, trying to say it will be quick or they can’t do it in written form, move on to telling them you’re not comfortable making any kind of verbal statement, but you will provide a written response to any request for information. This lets you take time to form a clear response to anything they ask. You can also take time and re-read to make sure you really said what you wanted to and didn’t contradict yourself. It seems a little time consuming but it will protect you in the end.

imageLong story short it’s these guys responsibility to do and say whatever it takes to pay you, the other guy, and or anyone else as little money as possible. So know what to say and when to shut up, read your policy, take a look at city or state law, hire a lawyer if needed, and protect your own interest.

Long semi-dramatic tales of insurance company woe included below.

Last year someone backed into my wife in her parked car in a parking lot. We provided a written statement then later they called saying they needed her to explain it all again and they talked round and round attempting to get her to say she “might” have also been starting to back up. Mind you this was our own insurance company, they did this because the lady who hit her had no insurance and if they had gotten her to say she was also moving/starting to move they could have declared they were both at fault and it would be a $300 deductible rather than the $50 we have for uninsured motorist claims.

More recently I had to take my niece to the ER after she was hit by a car on her skateboard.  The lady who hit her had cut through and area of her churches parking lot behind the building that they roped off during the weekdays specifically so that kids could skate without worrying about cars.

While waiting at the ER someone with the ladies insurance companies showed up and I had to stop him from interrogating her. He tried to get my nice to say that she had maybe gone out of bounds because she wasn’t paying attention, or maybe she had fallen earlier in the day so her broken wrist wasn’t caused by the accident ect. I told him he needed to leave and that once we got done and had her home her parents would be more than happy to help her get a written statement together for his company.

He responded by trying to tell me if we refused to answer his questions right then he could write it all off and we would never see a dime. Now we have a lawyer involved who tells us they should have never attempted to talk to a 14 year old in the first place, not to mention the fact that he did it without her parents around( I made it very clear I was not her father).

Eagle Photograph

“As the eagle was killed by the arrow winged with his own feather, so the hand of the world is wounded by its own skill.” ~ Helen Keller

Eagle

From the Wildlife and Nature Facebook page.

Eagles are large, powerfully built birds of prey, with a heavy head and beak. Even the smallest eagles, like the Booted Eagle or Red-tailed Hawk, have relatively longer and more evenly broad wings, and more direct, faster flight.

Most eagles are larger than any other raptors apart from some vultures. Like all birds of prey, eagles have very large hooked beaks for tearing flesh from their prey, strong muscular legs, and powerful talons. The beak is typically heavier than most other birds of prey. They also have extremely keen eyesight (up to 3.6 times human acuity for the martial eagle) which enables them to spot potential prey from a very long distance. This keen eyesight is primarily contributed by their extremely large pupils which ensure minimal diffraction (scattering) of the incoming light. The female of all species of eagle known are larger than the male.

Eagles normally build their nests, called eyries, in tall trees or on high cliffs. Many species lay two eggs, but the older, larger chick frequently kills its younger sibling once it has hatched. The dominant chick tends to be the female, as they are bigger than the male. The parents take no action to stop the killing.

Due to the size and power of many eagle species, they are ranked at the top of the food chain as apex predators amongst the avian world. The type of prey varies from genus to genus. Some eagles prefer to capture fish, though many eagles often capture various animals, especially other water birds, and are powerful kleptoparasites of other birds.

Among the eagles are some of the largest birds of prey: only the condors and some of the Old World vultures are markedly larger. It is regularly debated which could be considered the largest species of eagle. They could be measured variously in total length, body mass or wingspan.

The different lifestyle needs among various eagles result in variable measurements from species to species. For example, many forest-dwelling eagles, including the very large Harpy and Philippine Eagles, have relatively short wingspans, a feature necessary for being able to maneuver in quick, short bursts through dense forested habitats. On the other hand, eagles in the genus Aquila are found almost strictly in open country, are superlative at soaring, and have relatively long wings for their size.

Redheads are not going Extinct

“You’d find it easier to be bad than good if you had red hair,” said Anne reproachfully. “People who haven’t red hair don’t know what trouble is.” ~ Anne to Marilla in Anne of Green Gables

“Blondes are noticed but redheads are never forgotten.” ~ Anon

The story of redhead extinction has gone around the Internet before, most recently in 2005, with news articles again citing the Oxford Hair Foundation as a source. These articles work on the mistaken assumption that recessive genes — like the one for red hair — can “die out.”

Recessive genes can become rare but don’t disappear completely unless everyone carrying that gene dies or fails to reproduce. So while red hair may remain rare, enough people carry the gene that, barring global catastrophe, redheads should continue to appear for some time. ~ HowStuffWorks.com

Redheads are rare with somewhere between 1 to 2% of the world population sharing that trait. I have a few friends with red hair and even fewer from my family. To me, a redhead is an exotic human and something that we can see for generations to come.

Pinterest 2012

“Pinterest is becoming the next big name in the social media space.

For those who do not yet know, Pinterest is an online pinboard that lets you put your favorite images on a single Web page. You can share your “pins” with your friends or browse pinboards created by others.” ~ Forbes

Some of my categories in 2012

I minored in art when I was in college. A painter, the classes were some of my favorite. I had given up music because I didn’t have time for an all consuming hobby/minor. Art didn’t take as much time.

So when I heard of Pinterest, I dabbled with the new social media platform. It is a nice diversion when I’m waiting for a late bus and have tired of reading from my new job syllabus, daily news, and FB stream. While not for everyone, Pinterest is part of my immersion into the world of social media.
