Parenting 101: You’re Fired

“Most people work just hard enough not to get fired and get paid just enough money not to quit.” ~ George Carlin

When my two kids became old enough to have chores I took each of them, to the back yard to talk. The story went something like this:

Aaron, you are a fantastic employee. When you do your job, the business does well. No one does the job better than you. But when you forget to do the job or show up late, we suffer. So I am regretfully going to have to fire you. I trust you understand.

After the first “deer in headlights” look, they got it and we shared a moment. This conversation never resulted in them doing their chores better. But it was something they both remember to this day.

The invisible citizen

Eastwooding: Taking advantage of a Celebrity moment in Social media to gratuitously promote your cause.

Picture from Pinterest, Tumbler, and Facebook as part of the Eastwood meme.

Mitt Romney probably hoped that surprise guest Clint Eastwood would make his day at the convention. Instead, the 82-year-old actor gave a rambling speech that was as disastrous as the botched bank robbery that he stopped in “Dirty Harry” while playing a jaded San Francisco cop.

Eastwood talked to an empty chair representing President Barack Obama. Huffington Post

Jon Stewart opened The Daily Show‘s final night in Tampa by basking in the “awesome” and “hilarious” speech Clint Eastwood gave at the Republican National Convention, which consisted of the Oscar-winning actor yelling at a chair for ten minutes. But while Stewart was awe-struck over Eastwood’s speech, he was not so kind to Mitt Romney‘s acceptance speech, bashing it as being a whitewash of American history.

Stewart admitted he was “dispirited” by being in Tampa all week, but at the last second, Eastwood saved him with “a fist full of awesome.” He gleefully expressed his amazement that Eastwood “spent twelve minutes on the most important night of Mitt Romney’s life yelling at a chair,” describing the speech as the most amazing old-man moment he’s seen since “Dick Cheney non-fatally shot one in the face.” Mediaite video of Jon

Personally, I luv Obama’s response on Twitter.

Outdoor Gigs for Big Bands

One of my bands, the Microsoft Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra, had two outdoor gigs this August. Outdoor gigs are not my favorites, but playing at the Ballard Locks has always been a favorite activity for me.

Here is some of the reasons why Ballard Locks is a good venue.

  1. The venue is shaded by trees so we aren’t sitting in the sun.
  2. The locks are a nice place to visit.
  3. There is a dedicated place for band members to park.
  4. The drummer and sound guy can get their vehicles within 20 yards of the band stand.
  5. The place is well attended with very polite and appreciative audiences.
  6. We don’t get interrupted by an obnoxious announcer hawking shirts or doing public announcements between each song.
  7. The venue provides chairs, water, and a sound system. (Less stuff to schlep.
  8. We own how we use the two hours. We break and end when we want to.

The band has come a long way in it’s eight years of existence. Once called the Microsoft Jazz Band, this year we became the Microsoft Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra.

As you can see, the fronts that Suzy helped me design and build are still holding up. We went with matching Microsoft shirts for the first time ever. Robin Hilt provided the vocals for this song.

Wild Bill Coady on sticks, Ray Guyll directing, Sam Grone on solo tenor and Molly on alto sax round out some of the new people in the band. Mike Pautz is our sound man for this gig.

And, this is the best sax section I have ever had the privilege of sitting in with.

This weekend we’ll be at a new venue at the Coupeville Town Park.

Microsoft Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra specializes in the “as recorded” arrangements of the big band era. Most of these arrangements have been made available only to the MJJO.

Many of the arrangements came directly from the libraries of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Arty Shaw, Harry James, The Dorsey Brothers, etc. As such, we are able to include and feature the song styling’s that were unique to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darren, Louie Prima, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Anita O’ Day, etc.

One of the best descriptions of the band was provided by one of our audience members “Electric and exciting!!”

At major Microsoft functions the MJJO is the band of choice!

Takin’ a Friday off, just for me

Babies don’t need a vacation, but I still see them at the beach… it pisses me off! I’ll go over to a little baby and say ‘What are you doing here? You haven’t worked a day in your life!’ ~ Steven Wright

imageI just had too much stuff to do and with two gigs this weekend, it didn’t look like I was gonna get stuff. done. There’s contracts to sign for my bands, a guest blogger post to edit, a new thermostat to install and music to sort for the two gigs. Hey, I might even get some practice time in… naw.  ;0)

But first I’m suckin’ on the joe and watching ABC’s Good Morning America. There some band playing I’ve never heard before in a pop genre I couldn’t care less about.

imageOne of my projects is to install the Nest thermostat I got Suzy for her birthday. Well, I kinda got it for both of us, but she really is the high tech lover.

The Auto-Schedule feature really looks interesting too. It’s when the Nest automatically programs itself in about a week. It creates a personalized schedule based on the temperature changes you’ve made and continually adapts to your changing life.

About two hours after you’ve left the house, Nest will sense you’ve gone and automatically adjust the temperature to avoid heating or cooling an empty home. And you can adjust the house from your cell phone—how cool is that!

Okay, I’m gonna review that guest blog. Be well peeps. Yup, you too Greg.

Free Blues Backing Tracks

“Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.” ~ Jimi Hendrix

imageI was setting up a team event at work last month. I always chose a music them and this time was no exception. We have access at Amazon to great audio technicians. So the sound system was superb. The event was to be an open mic, but there were no takers.

I had noticed that a new employee on another team (and friend from my daze at Microsoft) had brought his guitar in for a gig that night. So I asked him if a team mate of mine could borrow the 1960-some Strat.

I had set up an American Idol style judge panel:

…consisting of some cute and funny people from the management team. The first thing that the player asked was where was the backline (drummer, bass, and pianist) that I had provided in the first event I set up. That cost me $200. And trying to get volunteers from the huge Amazon company had proved too hard to do.

So the guitar player had me search YouTube using “blues backing track” and voila, there were a number of backing tracks in any key. The event was a success with the use of a borrowed guitar and YouTube. Three people competed and the panel more than delivered the laughs. YMMV.

Top 3 Tips to Eating Less and Finding Your Perfect Weight

“Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity.” ~ Voltaire

Edouard Manet’s Déjeuner sur l’herbe

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, have no training in medicine, and have to admit to having the genetic code that makes it easy for me to be thin. But I have watched many family and friends suffer, trying to lose and keep weight off. So here my top ten tips to cut the amount of food you eat.image Getting close to your perfect weight doesn’t have to be an exercise in pain.

1. Eat nude. No, seriously. Fortunately for me, I’m not the only one suggesting this. Glamour’s Health & Life, amoung others, have written on this. My simple assertion is that when you eat in the nude there are a couple of things going on. It can be hard to concentrate on eating. It’s more than just the visual aspect, there is also the heightened awareness, hyper-critical nature of most people, and the desire to be thin like the media world would recommend… repeatedly.

With the right person, the experience is wonderful. Before you poo-poo this idea, think about it. Gourmet says this about the experience of eating while nude,

“But say, for the sake of argument, that you actually are going to eat in the nude: Chinese food isn’t the worst choice. Probably it’s best to stay away from sizzling shrimp and hot and sour soup, but if you happen to drop the occasional noodle or morsel of fried rice on yourself or your partner, well, no great harm done. It’s certainly a whole lot better than dropping a plate of chicken vindaloo in your lap, or a steaming hot artichoke, or (to think again of Scottish cuisine) a deep-fried Mars bar.”

2. imageSnack healthy. If you feel very hungry and it isn’t a meal time, consider options that are super healthy. Crisp baby carrots, nuts, or just a glass of water with ice can be very satisfying. There is this notion of eating many small meals rather that three big meals. Just think of it snacks spread throughout the day.

Find foods you like that are healthy. Maybe it’s a bowl of puffed rice in skim milk. Or it could be a piece of toast lightly buttered. Fry up an egg and consider that a snack. The world is your oyster.

3. Exercise Daily. I can not emphasize this enough. Build exercise into your day. If you work at a job where you sit for long periods of time, here are some times. Eschew the use of the elevator. Try to get 10+ up flights of stairs into every day. Stretch when you get up in the morning, every morning. Walk after the big meals to keep your metabolism going longer than if you just sat.

Hey, I’m not saying you buy into a gym membership, although that does have a lot of benefits for those really active folks and voyeurs. But planning exercise into everyday will benefit you in more ways than just weight control.

If you really want to lose weight, you might need the assistance of a doctor or dietician. Or you can research the subject and find your custom solution. Whatever you decide to do, consider running it by your doctor. And remember, a solution that works when you are 30 might need to be adjusted when you are 50.
