The Sax Garage Band Experience

I invited some of my friends to a sax quartet/quintet reading session. We ended up with six players counting my wife Suzy and me. I have so many charts I haven’t heard so there was plenty of music. Many of the players are doublers so there were multiple instruments everywhere.

We could have spent the day trying to get through the charts, but I had allocated 90 minutes and we actually played two hours. That meant that Micah had to call the ZipCar guys to extend his contract. Well, actually his girlfriend did it for us so that we could play on. She also took these pictures—thanks Leiszle!

We ended up turning the chairs towards the middle which facilitated conversation much more. And we had a great time, a common occurrence in the many sax xtet practice sessions I have attended. All in all, it was a very nice addition to a lazy Saturday afternoon. Thanks peeps!

Teabonics ~ Republican Radicals Ruin a Perfectly Good Party

“Just because I am Republican doesn’t mean that I hate Muslims, blacks, and/or women.” ~ Facebook post

imageI often offend my Republican family and friends by publishing things that they don’t support about their party. Being a conservative used to mean something; the Tea Party Patriots (aka tea baggers) have pretty much ruined that with their radial stands that are mostly based on their Christian faith and the desire to pay less in taxes no matter what the social costs.

All Muslims are their enemy because there is only one recognized religion in their myopic world. Not only does this group give Republicans a bad name, they do the same for Christianity. Any party that is proud to be based on ignorance and fear, will most likely move to become a historical footnote. But, not soon enough for this presidential race.

The “Tea Party Patriots” started out calling themselves teabaggers. They claimed they were going to start a “new Boston Tea Party” to protest high taxes. Their form of demonstration was to send a teabag to the White House, and then decided that because they were “teabagging” the White House they would be “teabaggers.”

imageAt one of their rallies, they held up a sign that said “teabag the liberal democrats before they teabag you.” Then the liberals at places like Daily Kos and Democratic Underground started pointing out the term “teabagging” has a sexual connotation. Next thing you know, they’ve become the “Tea Party Patriots” and berate the awful liberals who call them teabaggers.

The Tea Party (or teabagger, depending on your leanings) member is, thanks to the Obama tax plan, paying lower taxes under Obama than they did under their hero, Bush, Jr.

Not directly attributed to the tea baggers, but still very weird, is the desire of the Republican party to mandate matters of females without including them in the discussions. Rather than address issues of economy, short of driving for reduced taxes, they have a record of starting wars, protecting big business, and addressing ideals based on their Christian religion.

Teabonics is a Facebook group that has sprung up to point out the most shocking and ignorant examples of their ranting. Republicans have become known by the radical wing of their party. And, many existing Republicans have joined that band wagon, welcoming them because of the publicity they bring to the party. I guess any publicity is good publicity? Sigh…

Microsoft Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra ~ 2012

Last night was picture taking time with my all-time favorite band, the Microsoft Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra 2012. This band is directed by Ray Guyll and consists of mostly Microsoft employees and alumni. The lead tenor and I (retired Microsoftie) are the only two Amazon types in the band.

See more and join the MJJO group on Facebook. Hear us on YouTube. Our next performance is Saturday, 18 August at 2 PM at the Ballard Locks. If you’ve never been to do the lock tour and hear the free music, this might be the time to do so.

Woman vs. Man

“It is the woman who chooses the man who will choose her.” ~ Paul Géraldy (1885-1983) French poet.

ManWoman

Some people spend a lot of time considering the differences between the way men and women think. Me, I just celebrate the differences. It can be a scary world out there, but I try not to dwell upon it. I’m careful but not a fanatic. I do believe humor can defuse a situation though. Sometime it works.

Hemmingway Pissed Here

I took this picture when Suzy and I were visiting Key West a couple of years ago. The locals seemed to have a good sense of humor. It must get somewhat tiring to see the crowds of tourists wandering about day after day.

Hemmingway

What with the six-toed cats, Elvira stories, and more, this was one of the more interesting tours on our trip.

Life on this Blue Marble

imageMy mom mentioned, some time ago, that she likes my use of the title “Blue Marble” for the Earth so thought I’d share the derivation of the terminology.

The Blue Marble is a famous photograph of the Earth, taken on December 7, 1972, by the crew of the Apollo 17 spacecraft, at a distance of about 45,000 kilometres (28,000 mi).

The name has also been applied by NASA to a modern series of image data sets covering the entire globe at relatively high resolution, created by carefully sifting through satellite-captured sequences taken over time, to eliminate as much cloud cover as possible from the collated set of images.

The original caption to this photo was, “View of the Earth as seen by the Apollo 17 crew traveling toward the moon. This translunar coast photograph extends from the Mediterranean Sea area to the Antarctica south polar ice cap. This is the first time the Apollo trajectory made it possible to photograph the south polar ice cap. Note the heavy cloud cover in the Southern Hemisphere. Almost the entire coastline of Africa is clearly visible. The Arabian Peninsula can be seen at the northeastern edge of Africa. The large island off the coast of Africa is Madagascar. The Asian mainland is on the horizon toward the northeast.” ~ Wikipedia

I also love this animation (click on the picture to view) of the earth each month of the year and watch the snow move from north to south and then back again.

The Batman & Robin Meme

This cartoon has been floating around on the Internet for a couple of months. It’s a Batman and Robin cartoon where the talk bubbles can be co-opted in many different ways. This, as a saxophonist, is my favorite adaptation:

image

Most musicians don’t do the long tone exercise because it can be boring. I like to ask the sax players in my different music ensembles to do the long tone exercise starting soft and getting loud and then coming back to soft.

We should do this watching the tuning needle when we can as most of us tend to blow flat as you get louder. And it should be done at the start of every practice session and through a number of notes. It really is an excellent step towards developing that killer sound that we all strive for.

Sax Skin Tattoo

Found this on Facebook from my friend Bobbi. If this were a tattoo, that’d be one dedicated lady to her art.
