Microsoft Jazz Band Vocalists ~ 2011

I wanna give a shout out to the fab vocalists for the Microsoft Jazz Band 2011 season. The crowds loved them, danced to them, and couldn’t get enough. Much of the standard Jazz repertoire was written for the voice and subverting popular song through rhythm and phrasing has long been the domain of the Jazz Vocalist. A band without a vocalist is a very sad thing indeed.

Our female vocalist was the inimitable Shaz Adams. A talented singer with ties to the Three Tenors, this sultry singer had even the band’s full attention. Her voice is a warm, deep, rich in color and expression contralto; her voice guided by a sense of rhythm and technical mastership going from moaning, caressing, soaring, roaring, culminating with an ability to find that sweet spot in a song that leaves you speechless.

New this year to the band, but not to music, Roger Bare blew audiences and the band away with his jazzy styling’s. Influenced by 1940s to 1960s era singers like Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Bobby Darin, and Elvis Presley, Roger croons like Sinatra. We love to have him as a new addition to the band.

This coming year we have rebranded the band as the Microsoft Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra. Last year was a building year and I think we have all the pieces in place to have a very nice season. Drawing inspiration from the great bands, performers and composers of the “Jazz Age” and “Swing Era,” our orchestra will affectionately and authentically work to recapture the excitement and fascination of that musical heyday.

Hope to see you on the dance floor.

Email this week: How the Human Mind Works

“I hate mankind, for I think myself one of the best of them, and I know how bad I am.”  ~Joseph Baretti

A friend sent this email to her friends and I thought I’d share it here. I wish the picture was higher quality, but there is no telling how long it has been floating around the Internet.

butt

Analysis of the above picture can tell us a lot about how different people think.

– For young men, it’s a picture of a lady with a nice ass but only the most observant will notice that she is crossing a street.

–  The really observant will notice that she is wearing a thong.

– For older men, she appears to be a respectable woman – with a nice butt – on her way to work.

– The perverts among them will imagine her naked.

– For half of the women, this is an ordinary woman who should not have left home dressed that way.

– The other half will think she is a slut but wonder where she bought that blouse.

– Older women will imagine the misery that the woman’s butt will cause by the time she reaches 50.

– But only children, the extremely intelligent and the celibate will notice that the taxi is being driven by a dog.

Photographs

This week I was visiting with my Dad and a friend who had some inside info on Amazon from a Microsoftie who had worked there. We stopped at Tully’s Coffee shop. Always interested in learning about the company I work for, we met and talked.

While we sipped our coffee and chatted both of us young fella’s checked our phones periodically. So I asked this friend to take a picture with my Win7 phone with the Mango OS and then take the same shot with his iPhone 4. We had just gotten done comparing the GUIs and features. So this was to be our last comparison. Can you guess which picture is the Win7 and which is the iPhone?

Dad2012  Dad2011

Neither picture had any post processing which would have improved both pictures. I’m not sure that I prefer either; I would actually prefer something in between these. One is too dark, the other is too light. I do dislike the smeary lights in the Win7 photo which I have not seen before. Maybe my friend moved the camera a bit. He was trying half push the button to get the autofocus square to appear and was surprised when the camera snapped this shot.

I do know that it is way too easy to smear stuff on the lens of Win7 phone. I keep my phone in my pocket (yeah, I’m not planning on having any more progeny). I should have cleaned the lens with my eye glass cloth before the picture was taken. YMMV.

If you have a favorite post processor for photos, let me know. I’m looking for a free program to add edge treatments, vintage looks, and other fun stuff to the pictures I take.

New Year Projects 2012 ~ Milk Hill Crop Circles

Viewing one of the Milk Hill crop circles I muse, what will be your big project this year? This photo is from a blogger I follow (but who has not been active for a number of years) called “The Serpent”.

milkhill-solarcrop

First, for my grandkids, here is the Wikipedia definition of crop circles:

A crop circle is a sizable pattern created by the flattening of a crop such as wheat, barley, rye, maize, or rapeseed. Crop circles are also referred to as crop formations, because they are not always circular in shape. While the exact date crop cimageircles began to appear is unknown, the documented cases have substantially increased from the 1970s to current times.

Twenty-six countries reported approximately ten thousand crop circles in the last third of the 20th century. Ninety percent of those were located in southern England. Many of the formations appearing in that area are positioned near ancient monuments, such as Stonehenge.

According to one study, nearly half of all circles found in the UK in 2003 were located within a 15 km (9.3 miles) radius of Avebury. ~ Wikipedia

Crop Circles, the Bones of God is an interesting book on the subject. (Nick, are you reading this?) There are some crop-circle-based predictions here. Are we having fun yet?

As I ponder the amount of passion and beauty that went into the crop circle project (I refuse to call it a hoax and would sooner call it art) I marvel at the focus and energy that the work must have taken. Oh, and planning too.

Fun2009My hobby passions have been channeled into music (no surprise to my faithful readers) and the Microsoft Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra. With family, work, and the band, I don’t have a lot of time for anything else. My hobby includes elements of photography, video graphing, music library building, and instrument selection/practice. It gives me purpose to my listening, concert attendance, and song selections. This new year the MJJO has eight scheduled gigs so far. And we practice every other Tuesday.

So what is your hobby? Have you selected a passion that plays into other areas of your inherent skill and interests? Do you have goals? Are you making progress towards your goals?

Happy New Years my friends. May this year find you surrounded by those you love and here’s hoping you are doing the things you truly want to be doing.

What would your Future Self tell you?

“When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.” ~ John M. Richardson, Jr.

BridgeThis from a friend on Facebook today:

(CNN) — In an episode of the popular sitcom “30 Rock,” television CEO Jack has a hallucinatory encounter with his future self, from whom he receives life advice that helps him avoid major mistakes.

Most of us would also like to know which choices and decisions we make as young people will benefit us later on — or come back to haunt us. Although there’s no way to step into our own futures, we can get a very good sense of what mistakes younger folks should avoid. We can ask our “future selves”: our elders.

The rest of the article is kinda predictable so I thought I take this chance to provide a slightly different take. I remember when it clicked for me that starting something was almost always harder than the actual task at hand. I also came to really appreciate piecing work out into manageable chunks. So with that in mind, here are some of the things I would like to highlight for my younger self:

image1. Toys: Can you remember what you got for Christmas when you were young? Can you remember what you got last year? Typically things don’t matter. The toys I remember I remember the most from my youth are notable because what I did with them.

I remember telling stories to my brothers with a hand puppet, Klinker the dog. I remember some science fiction books I got one year from Uncle Ellis and and Aunt Alison. I remember my first bike that I shared with my three brothers. I don’t remember the other stuff that was given to me as I grew up.

I’m not saying toys are to be avoided, but I suspect that less is more. And giving gifts to all of your relatives doesn’t make them love you more. Giving memorable gifts can be fun. But don’t worry if that isn’t your thing.

image2. Education: What a loaded issue. Your whole life will be defined by your parents’ ability to instill a love of learning in children. Maybe it will be through reading. Or it could be by playing games with you. It is impossible to read too much to a child.

If you were lucky enough to have a parent who found your sweet spot for learning (some of this is a genetic thang) and then helped you progress to the point where you owned your learning needs, share this with the children in your life. That is a legacy that will be remembered by so many people; family, friends, acquaintances.

I can name the people who moved me closer to finding out who I destined to be. Starting with my parents, my siblings, my favorite teachers, each of these fantastic teachers made me what I am today. Who will remember you as a special teacher?

image3. Sex: Tied to education, believe it or not, will be the success of your sexual self. Fortunately, or unfortunately, this definition of yourself begins with your parents. Loving, caring, and demonstrative parents help young people learn that sex is not to be feared. Have you ever seen your parents kiss, express love for each other, and gently help you with any questions?

Because I was an avid reader and because a school mate Joe Locastro gave me his dad’s old issues of Playboy in my Junior high days, I came to love the female form in an unabashed way. Having a genetic predisposition towards shyness (beat out of me by 20 years in the military) reading about human relationships of all kinds helped me define what I wanted to be. Because my parents respected their children and each other, I learned to respect others.

image4. Choices: We are called upon to make many choices in our lives. Will I go to college? Who will I pick as my soul mate? Where will I work? Should I have kids? I think I might tell a younger version of myself that for any decision, there are a lot of right answers. Do your research; talk to your family and mentors. Then make a choice. Plan ahead as much as you can but don’t stress over any one decision that you may not have full control over.

Help your children make the right choice. Your conversations with them will help define them. Make them fun, informative and don’t overdo it. I remember taking my son Aaron in the backyard in his high school daze and talking to him thusly:

“Aaron, we really appreciate your work at school and around the house. When you do a good job, it is so impressive and we all benefit. But when you don’t show up, do the job that needs to be done, everyone suffers. So I am going to have to fire you because you are not as reliable as we need you to be.”

I remember his jaw dropping and then he got it. How will you help your children to be more aware what their choices mean to not only themselves but the people who surround them? Will your extended family and friends consider you someone that will provide interesting and valuable advise as needed?

image5. Service: My dad, the preacher once told this story. Imagine for a moment that you are a part of a tapestry that represents the universe. You may feel that you are are such a small, insignificant part of the whole picture. How can I make this universe a better place? Now imagine that you go about trying to make that very small part as beautiful and healthy as you can. You plant trees, pick up trash, work hard and treat people with respect.

Even though you can’t see the impact on the whole tapestry yourself, the tapestry is better looking. But some people will notice too, and they will copy what you are doing, expand upon your efforts and your sphere of influence grows in a positive way. This tapestry becomes a much nicer tapestry because of your positive influence. Sometimes, that is the best that one can give.

If you went back to the past to spend some time with a younger you, what would you share? What message would you have for yourself?

Facebook Timeline Test Drive

I have been using the new Facebook Timeline for a couple of weeks and thought I’d share my viewpoints. Remember, I am an optimist, who strives to simplify. And I am a very visual person, so glitter does tend to distract me. Here is my new profile:

FBtimeline

Rather than right a long post, I am going to address why I like this format. First, your FB profile picture is amplified with a “cover picture”. Yes, this speaks to the artist in me but causes some friends some grief because they “have to” figure out what to use as a cover. Sigh… really?

Notice that the posts are spread out like a newspaper with two columns. I think they call it a scrapbook format. I find it easier to scan and catch up with my friends this way. There are rumors this is not a good experience on a mobile device and that the page loads much slower for those with antique computers.

Finally, and this is a big work item, there is a life timeline that is way too intimidating a work item. However, you don’t have to address it immediately if ever and parts of the timeline are auto-populated with the data you provided, like birthday, high school graduation, marriage and the like.

I have started working on my timeline and the associated map of where I’ve been by editing key pictures in my collection. I should note that I have a relatively small group of friend (I try to keep it below 200 at any given time) and no lurkers who I don’t know. I’ve ratcheted down the security so that very little is public.

YMMV but today I am happy with the resulting profile. I expect to discover other aspects as I progress, but I do find that the people adopting the new Facebook Timeline seem to be my kind of people; writers, artists, and lovers.

Christmas Eve Musings…

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” ~ Hamilton Wright Mabi

I am enjoying a quiet Saturday morning on this Christmas eve. Dawgly is sleeping at my feet and I get to play with some recently repaired instruments (bass clarinet and bari sax) today. On Facebook Brad Benefield post this luvly Christmas duet as part of his annual 12 days of Christmas arrangements:

Peter and Brad tear it up.

Tomorrow the family arrives for Christmas dinner and to exchange gifts for the young-uns. Josie’s family will arrive first which will give us some quality time. Shortly thereafter XmasCookiesMom and Dad will arrive having first attended brother Andy’s Christmas Brunch. On the menu, Turkey, stuffin’, cranberries, pumpkin pie, mincemeat pie, and more. Good eatin’s as they say.

I would be remiss if I didn’t share this picture of some interesting Christmas cookies that my friend Benedikt put on Facebook. Clever, they just made me laugh.

They say the greatest gift is that of friendship. Tonight Suzy and I will be out on the town with some very dear friends. Good food, great company, and a chance to just sit back and be served sounds good to me. Here’s hoping that you and yours have a lovely holiday celebration.

My precious…

“Even the good plans of wise wizards like Gandalf and of good friends like Elrond go astray sometimes when you are off on dangerous adventures over the Edge of the Wild, and Gandalf was a wise enough wizard to know it.” ~ Chapter Four

We have been waiting a while for this movie with just a few tidbits eeked out along the way. Now we hear that we are a year away from seeing the movie. But oh the delicious anticipation of a well done movie by Peter Jackson and based upon a book that we adored. This time the movie will be in 3D and uses a new high-speed filming technique.

Coming in December 2012

The NY Daily News breaks this news today: Prepare for a return to Middle Earth.

imageWarner Bros. has released the first official look at the highly anticipated prequel to “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”

The announcement trailer shows an older Bilbo Baggins as he tells his nephew Frodo about his extraordinary adventure that led to him finding the infamous Ring of Power.

“You asked me once if I had told you everything there was to know about my adventures,” Bilbo says in the trailer. “Well, I can honestly tell you I told the truth… I may not have told you all of it.”

imageBoth Ian Holm and Elijah Wood reprise their “Lord of the Rings” roles for the film, while Martin Freeman of the U.K.’s “The Office” plays the younger Bilbo.

The events in the film take place 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings” story. The young Bilbo embarks on an adventure with a group of warrior dwarfs to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from an evil dragon.

Also reprising their roles from the previous films are Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom and Andy Serkis as Gollum.
