Mi-Bemol Saxophone Orchestra ~ Simply Amazing

I posted this to Facebook and it became viral amongst my musician friends. It is amazing on many levels, not the least that four soprano saxes could play in tune together.

It was very interesting to me because I am struggling with the soprano sax on three Holst charts from his planet series. The Venus chart as a sop sax solo that has me pulling my hair and I almost gave it to Suzy to play on clarinet, but I’m going to give it one more week to see if I can’t get it in tune.

xkcd: She said breasts… <dumb laugh>

image

It pisses me off to see this kind of lame humor based unfair characterizations of the male condition. I mean really, do you think we really are that shallow? You see these broad brush indictments everywhere. xkcd you could have done better, much better. Sigh…

Seriously, how did she read my mind?

When I Grow Up, I want to play like *these guys* :O)

It’s the Saxofollia group again. The joy they bring to their performance tickles me. Stupid hats, bring them on me sez.  Comic routine; why not. Stellar saxophone musicians each, these fellows are both fun to watch and listen to. Reminds me of the Nuclear Whales.

Gershwin’s “Oh Lady be Good”

I sent this clip to my sax quartet with a recommendation that we look into this. I’m guessing they’d run kicking and screaming from the group if I moved to the slapstick mode.

My Fav Superbowl 2011 Commercial ~ Use the Force

This was probably my favorite Super Bowl commercial… The way that kid can still convey his expressions through the mask is priceless! (Not to mention that Darth Vader’s theme by John Williams is probably one of the most recognized movie themes of all time!) ~ Ingrid DuMosch DeHaan

Passion or a driven set of parents?

yanoMeet Saori Yano, saxophonist extraordinaire. I can help but wonder if this is what you get if insist upon your child puttin’ in the shed time? With the silly outburst of Amy Chua’s book, “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother”, mostly by white parents btw, I am reminded of the time that I hear one of my siblings complain about the parents not forcing the piano lessons.

You can find her albums on Amazon here. But there are quite a few videos of her performances on YouTube too. CHeck this one out:

Saori Yano

As many have said, is the Charlie Parker reincarnated as a pretty, teenage Japanese girl?  No matter how she got there, she really has some jazz chops.

Kenny G or Kenny Z? Inquiring minds would like to know. ;O)

Kenny G lives! The latest spotting…

Kenny G keeps order inside the walls of Luxury Prison. Visit Facebook at http://audi.us/EstateSale or Twitter at http://audi.us/ProgressIs to take part in Audi’s two social media contests and join the movement to re-define luxury.

I know so many players who became a sax player because of this man. I also know that if you use any of his songs for your first transcription, you will find it relatively easy to do because of the key signatures he has used on many of this songs.

From Wikipedia we discover that he has many interests:

Kenny G is married to Lyndie Benson, with whom he has two sons, Max (age 16) and Noah (age 11).

He frequently plays golf and had a handicap index of +0.6. He has participated in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am tournament seven times as of 2007 and teamed with Phil Mickelson to share the AT&T pro-am title in 2001 with the team of Tiger Woods and Jerry Chang. In the Golf Digest rankings of Top 100 in Music, according to golf handicap indexes of major musicians, he was first in 2006 and second in 2008.

Kenny G is an aircraft pilot and has a De Havilland Beaver seaplane that he flies regularly. He is also one of the original investors in the Starbucks coffee house chain.
