Swing Dance Gig tonight

I have a swing dance gig with the Pacific Cascade Big Band. Started last year as the B jazz band of the Woodinville Community Band, it is quickly becoming a fun place to play with decent musicians. The swing dance last month had over a hundred high school and older dancers. Two of us from the band got to help choose the best dancer during a contest.

Wizard of Oz – Redux

The-Wizard-of-OZ-01 I found this article on the Designing Inspiration, well… inspirational. Having dabbled in art, in fact minor’ing (hey coined a new word) in that field in college, these 25 various takes on the old classic make me want to take up the pencil again. My son is very good at capturing the essence of a situation or person in art. He also designs computer games and is a senior admin at the Infinity Mugen Team forum. So this post is mostly for him.

The illustration is by designed by Sebastian Giacobino. From the article “The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical-fantasy film mainly directed by Victor Fleming and based on the 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. In the film, Dorothy, a schoolgirl living in Kansas, is struck unconscious during a tornado. She dreams about how she and her dog Toto, with the help of a Scarecrow, a Tin man and a Cowardly Lion, find their way home from the magical world of Oz.

Many people like these four characters very much: sweet Dorothy, smart Scarecrow, brave Tin man and sensitive Lion. Many artists like them as well, and they have created various artworks featuring the four to show their fondness. We have selected 25 of the best illustrations, which might remind you of that magical world and that famous song “Over the Rainbow”.

Note it was hard to pick just one characterization as so many of them were excellent. But the idea was to tease you with just one shot to get you to view the rest at the Designing Inspiration site. Enjoy.

Microsoft’s Give Campaign

It’s Microsoft’s annual Give Campaign and is my custom for the last four years, I have donated a late-bloomer sax lesson. Not only do I get to meet people returning to music, the giving program gets a donation. Here’s my entry as of today.

image

The Giving Campaign Auction is just one of the many programs and activities to raise money for the United Way. You can win items donated by fellow employees, and donate something yourself. All funds are matched by Microsoft. The Auction tool is built this year by a group of volunteers from MSIT and they are using Windows Azure with a brand new Silverlight UI. It is so much easier to use than last year’s auction tool.

SWOJO: And now for something different…

Mom, sister Deb, brother Pete, Suzy and I went to hear Tina sitting in with the Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra (SWOJO) at Crossroads. Luv’d their stuff. So interesting. Here’s John Carisi’s "Israel" done by the SWOJO at Crossroads of Bellevue on a frosty autumn in ’09. See and hear more at swojo.org.

For those of you on my Facebook network, there is a cool Daniel Barry original done right by SWOJO called ‘La Folia Lando’. It was a minute longer than YouTube allows so I had to post it to Facebook.

Microsoft’s Free Anti-virus Offering

image

We all know folks who won’t spring for anti-virus and malware software. For these kind of friends and family point to this from the Washington Post today:

Microsoft‘s free new anti-virus product is earning decent marks in preliminary tests, putting it roughly on par with many other stand-alone anti-virus products available today.

A number of readers seem keen to try out Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), but are eager to hear how the program stacks up against other free anti-virus tools in terms of detecting and removing malware. While the results of early testing may not provide that side-by-side comparison, they do offer a glimpse of how effective MSE may be in blocking and tackling some of the most common threats currently in circulation.”
