Amazon’s Kindle, just in time for Christmas

I bought an electronic book a while back, okay over ten years ago, but there were not enough titles and certainly not the titles I was reading which was mostly books from the best seller’s list. Walt Mossberg, one of my fav high-tech columnists writes about a new entry into the market.

"Now, the biggest name in online book sales, Amazon.com, is entering the fray with a $400 electronic book reader called Kindle that aims to succeed by offering a much better shopping experience.

The Kindle is the first e-book reader that allows you to select, buy and download titles directly to the device, instead of downloading them to a PC first and then transferring them over. Amazon is offering a large collection of digitized books — about 90,000 — compared with fewer than 25,000 for Sony. The Kindle also can download newspapers, magazines and blogs directly, and update them automatically. This is possible because the Kindle comes with free, built-in wireless Internet access, using a cellular data network."

I found the comments to be especially insightful too. Having bought a number of titles for my old unit, I’d have to rebuy them if I wanted to read them on a new unit. Go figure.

If I still lived in the States I would most certainly look into it.  Inflated prices here, lack of access to products, tax, fees, and shipping hurdles going over the border, make it not worth the hassle.

The Kindle is cool, but it ridiculous you have to buy ebooks over again – that is something they really need to work on!

    Hello Gandalphe,
This was an interesting read!  Thinking here…..something I might be interested in.  I’ll have to check it out.

Well I haven’t named the spider yet…..and undoubtedly……I probably won’t.  Now back to spiders, having lived in the southwest, they very much deserve their bad rap.  Never want to get bitten by the black widow or the scorpion.  I was always on the watch for them.

I hope you are well.  I’m sure this is a busy time for you and your family.  Good holiday and the best in the coming year.  Bittersweet

    Good afternoon,
It is so amazing of how far we can proceed in technology over a ten year period.
Think about what the next ten years will bring to us.
Have a smooth week in Seattle, Greg
