Warning: Grousing about Travel

follett-pillars-of-the-earth-thumb I spent 4 hours on a plane yesterday. Imagine a 6′ 4" fellow like myself jammed into seat designed for a person 5′ 10" or so. My knees are at my chin and I had the always fun window seat so that when I get up two people have to stand up too. I was reading "Pillars of the Earth" and made it most of the way through that.  What an excellent read.

I was deep into a rather risque part of the book as we were landing in Houston. And the fellow next to me was either looking out the window or reading my book. What the heck, I was actually embarrassed. The risque part went on for at least four pages but I couldn’t read it with this fellow looking that way. I’m sure I was imagining things, but geesh, Louise.

It is very hot and humid Houston in July; who knew! ;o) This Northwestern was very uncomfortable. Almost immediately I had sweat rolling down my body. That is a feeling I could do without; how spoiled am I? I’m trying to max liquids which is something that I don’t always do.

I toyed with the idea of hitting the pool at the Marriott but every time I walked by the pool was filled with kids. Probably not a good idea to lay out in the sun for a pale skinned fellow like me anyway. And there was this boy wandering around the first floor crying. Kinda surrealistic. Renee, my coworker, wondered if the child was lost. I hadn’t thought of that. I figured an older sibling did something. It’s interesting that Renee immediately thinks of a child in need and I think of the otherwise. I was brought up in a big family so maybe that explains part of it.

Well, I have to get dressed for the conference. It’s strange to be on conference time vice my normal home schedule. Normally I would have already been at work about three hours already. And with the party tonight, it will be a late night.

It is the one thing i am not looking forward to on that 28 hour flight: being crammed in there like sardines… Bob is pretty tall, 1.87m – i have no idea what that would be in the US – but i am hoping it will be better than riding a bus.
    love, daphne

I try to reward myself by reading a really good book. Suzy watches movies on a portable DVD player. Otherwise, it would be even worse.

I really don’t like flying and I won’t do it unless it is an emergency.
I will have to check the book out.  😉

Thanks for the review.  Houston is pretty steamy but it is an interesting city.  Some decent grub there.

Gandalfe you poor baby jammed into a seat like that let me kiss it and make it all better…just being playful. Smiles! Making a jest here ha, ha. Although I will admit I have a preference for tall men something in the way of fit lets say. A very nice size indeed 6’ 4” my you are a big boy. Darling you could not have picked a more excellent read I love “Pillars Of The Earth.”

I also would have loved to have spied you out of the corner of my eye when reading the risqué part just to notice the gentlemen helping himself to your book…smiles. I imagine a light blush gently washing across your face I am thinking a little colour perhaps how delightful never a dull flight that’s for certain. I wish you a grand conference darling and an equally smashing after party. Have a fun work play day. Kisses Catherine

I can certainly relate to the pains of travel.  I am in No. Calif this week and it was 111 degrees in Sacramento yesterday.  And don’t you hate it when they say "but it’s a dry heat".  Wet/dry – it’s too darn hot!  Of course this week we finally have perfect weather in Seattle area – usually happens when I’m gone.  Home tomorrow late afternoon though  – Yay.  Have fun at your conference & party.

I got all steamed up reading this post.   Steamed at the miserly airlines, steamed at the thought of  Houston in July (did Dante include Houston in his ‘Inferno?  If not he should have),  and steamed, in a good way, by your risque story.  Risque is good.  Hope you survive Houston (third ring of Hell….for speeders and parking ticket scofflaws.)

A good book is a really nice escape in a difficult situation or when you need to fill a large time slot.  I like to intersperse a cozy inbetween a heavy one.  My favorites as you know are mysteries.  I’m glad you will be back tomorrow.  Your Dad spent the morning working on another senior friend’s computer.  He doesn’t charge anything and so far has done it only for members of our church.  See you soon. Mom
